Newport Old Grammar School

Newport Towngate Mill

Newport Old Grammar School, undated but certainly prior to 1910, when the Star Hotel (left) was destroyed by fire. Built around 1614, it was reputedly where Charles I was held prior to being moved to London for his execution.

Towngate Mill, Newport. This was at the bottom of Hunnyhill. It was originally a medieval mill site, although the mill shown was build in 

1836. It ceased working in 1939 and was demolished in 1998.

The pond has recently been restored. (Ideal)

An artistic view of the warehouses at Newport Quay dated 1905, 

described as 'Venice, Newport'. (Tuck)

The railway bridge, Newport Quay. The span in the centre 

slid open to allow barges to go through. The railway was

 closed in 1966 and the bridge demolished. (Collis)

A 1907 view looking towards Newport harbour. The bridge above 

may be seen behind the tug. The white building on the left was 

built on the hull of an old boat and was known as Noahs Ark. (Welch)

The hypocaust and part of a mosaic, Newport Roman villa. 

Built in around 280 AD and rediscovered in 1926. (Dixon)

Albany Barracks, Parkhurst, Newport, undated. I think 

the barracks became part of Camp Hill prison.

An artistic view described at 'The River Medina' which would appear 

to be  'Cement Mills', some way north of Newport. (Tuck Oilette)
